Introduction of Malaysia Vehicle Plates

Malaysia registered vehicle plates are displayed at the front and rear of all private and commercial motorised vehicles. 
The issuing of the license plates is regulated and administered by the Malaysia Road Transport Department (Malay: Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia or JPJ).
Registration plates of Peninsular Malaysia
A - Perak
B - Selangor
C - Pahang
D - Kelantan
J - Johor
K - Kedah
M - Malacca
N - Negeri Sembilan
P - Penang
R - Perlis
T - Terengganu
V - Kuala Lumpur
 
Vehicle Number Plate Specifications
3 types of number plates that are allowed for use:-
  1. White alphabets and numbers, embossed or glued on a black plate.
  2. White alphabets and numbers, embossed or glued on a red plate for vehicles belonging to embassies, the UN and the International Natural Rubber Association.
  3. Black alphabets and numbers, embossed or glued on a white plate for taxicabs and hired cars.

 

 

 

Peninsular Malaysia

The Peninsular Malaysia (except Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Langkawi; see below) license plates for private and commercial motorized vehicles with the exceptions of those used by taxis, vehicle dealers and diplomats follow a Sxx #### algorithm.

  • S - The state or territory prefix. (e.g. : W = Kuala Lumpur, P = Penang, B = Selangor)
  • x - The alphabetical sequences. (e.g. : A, B, C ... X, Y)
  • # - The number sequence. (e.g. : 1, 2, 3 ... 9998, 9999)

  • Q - The constant prefix for all Sarawak license plates.
  • D - The division prefix. (e.g. : A = Kuching, M = Miri)
  • x - The alphabetical sequences. (e.g. : A, B, C ... X, Y)
  • # - The number sequence. (e.g. : 1, 2, 3 ... 9998, 9999)

  • D - The division prefix. (e.g. : A = West Coast, T = Tawau)
  • x - The alphabetical sequences. (e.g. : A, B, C ... X, Y)
  • # - The number sequence. (e.g. : 1, 2, 3 ... 9998, 9999)

The exceptions in the algorithm are as follows:

  • There can be no leading zeroes in the number sequence.
  • The letters I and O are omitted from the alphabetical sequences due to their similarities with the numbers 1 and 0.
  • The letters Z is omitted and reserved for use on Malaysian military vehicles.
